Fields of expertise

The work of the Swedish Dairy Association covers ten different fields of expertise, all of them essential to create a successful Swedish dairy sector. A short presentation follows below. 

Food & nutrition 

Nutrition & Gastronomy

The Dairy Nutrition Council, the Swedish Cheese Council and the Swedish Butter Council work to promote a positive attitude toward milk and dairy products, especially in schools and preschools. Our nutrition researchers develop and spread knowledge of the nutritional value of milk.

Milk quality 

Milk Quality

High quality of milk and dairy products is taken for granted. Therefore, the Swedish Dairy Association develops knowledge of the composition, properties, hygiene and safety of milk. Our Gold Medal programme is one way of recognising the dairy farmers’ quality work.

Environmental issues

Environmental Issues

To the Swedish Dairy Association, protection of our environment is a matter of course. We therefore actively work to further reduce the environmental influence of milk and to increase the awareness of circular flows.

Milk policy 

Milk Policy

Political decisions with regard to the dairy sector are today taken at several levels; nationally, within the European Union and internationally. The Swedish Dairy Association covers, analyses and influences policy issues at all levels.

 

Milk Economy

One of the most important commitments of the Swedish Dairy Association is to create conditions to increase the dairy farmers’ profitability and long-term competitiveness. We therefore develop advisory tools in various fields, such as business economy, biology and technique.

Management

A dairy farm that functions well as a whole is a prerequisite for the farm to become profitable. The Swedish Dairy Association offers proposals for new working methods to suit the future dairy farmers and their advisers. 

Cow Data

The Swedish Dairy Association is responsible for a comprehensive cow database. Approximately 90 percent of all dairy cows in Sweden are included in this recording programme, making it unique in the entire world. This database forms the basis for the development of all management tools used by the dairy farmers.

Feeding & management 

Feeding

Well balanced feeding and good management are prerequisites for a healthy cow. The work of the Swedish Dairy Association in this particular field creates new knowledge and practical tools for feeding advisors as well as for individual dairy farmers.

 

Animal Welfare

Healthy cows are profitable cows. The Swedish Dairy Association is therefore a main driving force in the work with animal welfare and a low and controlled drug use.

Breeding 

Breeding

The Swedish Dairy Association calculates genetic breeding values, develops tools and produces data on which decisions can be made for a sound breeding programme. The Nordic breeding objective is unique, as it puts strong emphasis on milk yield as well as on fertility and health.
